3 Ways to Pray for the New President
As Donald J. Trump begins his term as the 47th President of the United States, Christians are called to pray for him. Regardless of political affiliation or personal opinions, Scripture encourages us to lift up our leaders in prayer. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
Praying for our leaders is an act of obedience to God, a demonstration of love for our nation, and an acknowledgment of His sovereignty over all things. As President Trump takes office, here are three specific ways we can pray for him.
1. Pray for Wisdom and Discernment
Leading a nation is a monumental responsibility, requiring wisdom that surpasses human understanding. James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Pray that President Trump would seek godly wisdom in his decisions, that he would be surrounded by wise counselors, and that he would discern the best course of action for the nation, especially in moments of crisis or conflict.
2. Pray for a Heart of Compassion and Justice
Micah 6:8 provides a clear directive for leaders: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Pray that President Trump would govern with a heart that seeks justice for all people and compassion for the vulnerable. Ask God to soften his heart toward those in need, to value human dignity, and to pursue policies that reflect the goodness and righteousness of God.
3. Pray for Strength and Humility
The pressures of leadership can be overwhelming, and no president can bear the weight of the office alone. Pray that President Trump would lean on God for strength and direction. Isaiah 40:29 reminds us, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” Pray also for humility—that he would recognize his need for God’s guidance and seek Him in all things. Pray that he would lead not out of pride, but with a servant’s heart, seeking the welfare of the people above his own ambitions.
A Call to Faithful Prayer
As we pray for our president, we are reminded that our ultimate hope is not in any human leader, but in Christ, the King of kings. Proverbs 21:1 assures us, “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will.” Let us faithfully intercede for President Trump, trusting that God is at work, and seek His grace, goodness, and justice to prevail in our nation.
